Puerco Verde, Chorizo Piquante, Gatotastrophe and Perro Caliente (l to r) wish you a Feliz Cinco de Mayo
It’s Cinco de Mayo, so here’s a free pattern for you.
A few years ago, I found Rebecca Danger’s 50 Yards of Fun and immediately began knitting nano ninjas, junior jackalopes and little luchadores. I decided that the world needed a tiny luchador named Jazz Hands Jason, so I knit him up for my friend Jason, who is a kick-ass dancer. Of course, then he needed a tag team partner, so I also made Matt the Mighty, named for Jason’s then-boyfriend, now-husband, and mailed the two of them off to Matt and Jason in LA.

A few weeks after that, I realized that they also needed a wrestling pig, because Jason has always wanted a pet pig and if I was going to knit a pig to go with two tiny wrestlers, it might as well be one that they could fight. And so was born Bacon.

Bacon, the world’s first Pig Luchador
Since then, the pigs (because of course I had to knit one or two for myself) have been joined by Dog Luchadores and Cat Luchadores. I’ve written up the instructions for the appropriate snouts, ears and tails to be added to the original pattern. You will need to find a copy of the book to get the base pattern, but then you will also have patterns for tiny jackalopes, ninjas, yetis and a host of other characters.
I make my luchadores in fingering yarn on size US1 (2.25mm) needles which makes them about 4 inches (10cm) tall. Just the right height to stand next to a jar of Newman’s Own salsa.
Happy Knitting and Feliz Cinco de Mayo from Puerco Verde, Chorizo Picante, Gatotastrophe, Perro Caliente and me.
